Description

Roscoea Purpurea 'Dalai Lama' is the most unique of the species. It is a bulb that brings an exotic touch to the garden in summer with its deep purple flowers with a reddish-orange centre, resembling orchid blooms.

Also known as "False Orchid" or "Orchid Ginger", this 40cm (16in) tall plant is a perennial with fleshy roots. It forms a clump of strong, cinnamon-brown, tubular stems with linear leaves that are deciduous and dark green, measuring 15 to 25cm (6 to 10in) long. In June, the 5cm (2in) diameter, deep purple flowers with a reddish-orange centre appear in short spikes. They consist of a long, curving tube and three petals, with the upper petal forming a helmet and the lower petal forming a lip.

Originally from the Himalayas, Roscoea Purpurea 'Dalai Lama' thrives in moist, slightly acidic, well-drained soil in partial shade. The young shoots take time to emerge.

Roscoea Purpurea 'Dalai Lama' pairs well with rodgersias, cimifugas, and hostas in any ericaceous bed.
