More information

This hybrid lily produces large, well-displayed flowers in the colours of a sunset: deep pinks, oranges, peach tones and warm yellows. The young plant will flower from mid-June and for twice as long as most other lily varieties. It is easy to grow, its stems are sturdy and its pollen-free flowers are particularly long-lasting, both in the garden and in a vase.

Description

The 'Avalon Sunset' hybrid lily is part of a new line of hybrids between Asian and Oriental lilies that combine the qualities of their parents. The result is a robust, floriferous plant with large, long-lasting and remarkably coloured flowers. The captivating flowers of Avalon Sunset are an ode to the colours of the setting sun, blending deep pinks, oranges, and peach tones with warm yellows on the edges. This variety will bloom for several weeks from late spring. It is easy to grow, perfect in pots and provides excellent cut flowers.

Lilies belong to the Liliaceae family. There is a classification of horticultural lilies that includes 9 divisions, 'Avalon Sunset' is classified in the group of Asian x Oriental hybrids crossed with Asians, called AOA. Breeders use the vibrant colours and vigour of lilies from the Asian group combined with the long stems and large flowers of Orientals. Lilies in this category bloom just before classic Oriental varieties, and they are generally fragrance-free. Avalon Sunset forms a flower stem about 1m (3ft) high bearing numerous flowers from June with a diameter of 10-12 cm (4-5in), with slightly incurved petals. Each petal displays a blend of pink-red, salmon and yellow, from the centre to the edge. The flowers of this variety are sterile and the stamens are pollen-free: they are more durable and do not stain. The above-ground vegetation is deciduous, it disappears in winter and emerges from the ground in spring.

Avalon Sunset forms a hardy plant that prefers soil rich in humus. It is fairly tolerant, but it does not like excessively chalky or heavy soils. You can plant your lilies in beds of perennials and low bushes where they enjoy having their base in the shade and the other plants will help prevent the stems from bending in the wind. Lilies are ideal for borders and, of course, for cutting.

Planting and care

The 'Avalon Sunset' hybrid lily prefers humus-rich soil or compost, and it does not like overly chalky soils. Good drainage is important, as it will not thrive in heavy soils. You should plant it in full sun or partial shade, preferably in spring or October, burying the bulbs 15cm (6in) deep in a mixture of soil and leaf compost. Surround them with a layer of sand to prevent rot and slug attacks while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as growth only begins in April. Stake the stems when they reach 30cm (12in) high.

If red lily beetles appear, treat them promptly as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them manually but be careful as they drop as soon as they are touched, so place a box underneath. After flowering, it is a good idea to cut off the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed looking beautiful throughout summer.

Your lilies will be available at the beginning of October. Plant them as soon as you receive them. This hybrid lily is also suitable for container gardening. Place 1 to 5 bulbs in a deep pot, water lightly, and keep the pots frost-free. Bring them out in spring and enjoy their beauty on your terrace!
