Description

Tulipa 'Shiun' is a unique and chic variety of Triumph tulip. Its flared corolla displays ivory to white petals with an irregular magenta-pink-purplish fringed edge. It blooms from early to mid-spring, depending on the climate. Perfect for bouquets or dazzling borders.

Tulipa 'Shiun' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to have narrow cup-shaped flowers. 'Shiun' will reach a height of 55cm (22in) when in bloom. The flowers sit at the top of sturdy stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves. The elegant ivory-white flowers are quite square but with a narrow cup shape. They display six "petals" (more precisely tepals) with irregularly marginated magenta-pink edges. Flowering takes place in April, in the middle of the tulip season.

Tulipa 'Shiun' works well in small patches in perennial beds with white, pink or purple flowers. It looks wonderful with lilies, old roses, and Iris germanica in solid tones, recreating a sumptuous living tableau, reminiscent of still life paintings from the time of the "tulipomania". This late-flowering bulb extends the flowering season of tulips. It can be planted in flower beds, rockeries, pots, and containers. It will enhance balconies and patios. Its cut flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
