Description

Tulipa 'Ben Van Zanten' is a variety introduced in 1966, a tulip officially described as blood red, elegant and timeless, among the most planted. It produces large radiant, vibrant and uniform red flowers with excellent durability. They bloom in the middle of the tulip season, from early to mid-spring, depending on the climate. Perfect in flower beds and bouquets, this very reliable bulb is one of the must-haves to bring colour to spring. Combine it with white tulips, the contrast is amazing!

Tulipa 'Ben Van Zanten' is a Dutch creation from 1966. It belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is narrow cup-shaped flowers. The single, pure red, narrow cup-shaped flowers are perched on tall stems 45 cm (18in) above the broadly lanceolate leaves. They are slightly fragrant and have six "petals" (more precisely tepals) with the same intense and silky red on the inside. They flower in April - May, in the heart of the tulip season.

Triumph tulips are famous for their richly coloured, solid and resistant flowers, usable in flower beds and bouquets. They are among the most planted varieties, Unmatched for bringing the colour of spring to pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for beautiful long-lasting cut flowers.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. 'Ben Van Zanten' Triumph Tulip will thrive in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid depleting the plant.
