Description

Tulipa Negrita Parrot belongs to a very unique species, formerly known as Dragon, in which the petals are intricately carved.

The petals of the Negrita Parrot tulip are a beautiful intense violet mauve, making it a replica of the famous triumph tulip 'Negrita' but in a "parrot" form.

From their formation to their full bloom, the flowers are almost uniformly violet mauve. The huge flowers (over 15cm (6in)) are borne on flexible stems, making them particularly susceptible to bad weather. Therefore, they are most spectacular when cut for vases. In the sunlight, the large flowers open almost flat, revealing a star-shaped black centre from which the light yellow pistil emerges. The foliage is abundant, vigorous, and a lovely bluish-green.

Planting and care

Plant your Negrita Parrot tulips as soon as possible in well-drained, deeply loosened soil, 15/20 cm (6/8in) deep (bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they don't touch. Choose a sunny location for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks but let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting Heuchera, Foamflower, Brunnera, Bleeding Heart or Cypress Spurge at the forefront of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and elegantly hide their yellowed leaves.
