Description

Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Apeldoorn's Elite' has some of the largest flowers in its genus, with a delightful vanilla fragrance! Its beautiful corolla is dark orange, brushed with red, and its petals are edged with golden yellow. Belonging to a new line of Darwin hybrids, whose immense flowers are more durable, 'Apeldoorn's Elite' is a reliable and vigorous variety, with strong, weather-resistant stems. It flowers from mid to late spring. Sculptural and radiant in borders, it is also an exceptional flower for bouquets.

'Apeldoorn's Elite' Darwin Hybrid Tulip belongs to the lily family. Originally of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 4, which is characterized by large, single, ovoid-shaped flowers in the middle of the season, on long weather-resistant stems. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. 'Apeldoorn's Elite' is immense; reaching 55 to 70 cm (22 to 28in) high when in bloom, and its fully open corollas will measure up to 15 cm (6in) in diameter. Perched on strong stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the large cups are initially elongated, elegant, and a vibrant brilliant blend of red, orange, with golden yellow on the petal edges. The base of the flower is shaded green, while its small heart is spotted with black. The colour is enhanced by the thick texture of the petals.  It flowers in May-June, and each flower lasts several days before fading. This variety naturalises very easily in the garden, in fertile, well-drained soil.

'Apeldoorn's Elite' is suitable for large borders, and of course, for bouquets. Combine it with daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, alchemilla, Corsican hellebores, and euphorbia for stunning scenes. It can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots and containers. This tulip looks great on balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials. Use shallow water in your vase, just a little at the bottom is enough! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant 'Apeldoorn's Elite' tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. 'Apeldoorn's Elite' tulips will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer, in a sunny or partially shaded location. After flowering, it is best to remove the seed head to prevent the plant from being depleted.
