Description

The 'Verona Sunrise' Double Early Tulip is as beautiful and ever-changing as the dawn over the ancient Italian city of Verona. Its gently scented flower, resembling a peony, displays a combination of pink, peach, and champagne tones that vary from plant to plant, with each corolla opening to reveal a golden heart mottled with black. Supported by a sturdy, compact stem, it is a wonderful flower for borders and bouquets. Its flowering follows that of early single tulips.

The 'Verona Sunrise' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Originally from horticulture, introduced in 2010, it is currently classified in the group of double early tulips, which are known for flowering at the same height, making them a popular choice for well-organized borders. They are often fragrant and available in a mix of colours under the name 'Murillo' tulips. Perched on strong 40cm (16in) stems, just above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the double flowers of 'Verona Sunrise', 8cm (3in) wide, open almost flat. Each flower is unique, but all combine different shades of pink, antique pink, light salmon, peach, champagne... Flowering takes place in April, at the heart of the tulip season.

With their rich colours, sturdy and resistant flowers, suitable for both borders and bouquets, double early tulips with peony-like blooms enchant the spring. They are among the most popular varieties for cut flowers. Unmatched for creating colorful pots or splashes of color in sunny gardens, do not forget to consider the height and flowering period of tulips when designing your borders, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few extra bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful long-lasting cut flowers. This Verona Sunrise variety will be enhanced by white daffodils, forget-me-nots, or dames rocket.

About botanical species: Wild tulips are found from Western Europe to China and Japan, through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their range also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The center of diversity for the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

Planting and care

Plant the 'Verona Sunrise' tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as it could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a good exposure, sunny or semi-shady. Once flowering is finished, it is preferable to remove the fruits to not exhaust the plant.
