Description
The 'Big Smile' Late Single Tulip lives up to its name with its large yellow flower that shines like a sun in spring. This variety blooms between late April and early May, a little earlier than the other tulips in its group, almost at the same time as Darwin hybrids. You can enjoy its brilliance in flower beds, as well as in a vase.
The 'Big Smile' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Originally horticultural, introduced in 1990 in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in Division 5 of late single tulips, which are characterised by blooming late in the season. They possess the same qualities as 'Darwin hybrids' but bloom just after them. This variety 'Big Smile' will reach approximately 50 cm (20in) in height when in bloom. Perched on weather-resistant stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the flowers are ovoid and large. They have a thick texture, with silky reflections. The outer part of the corolla is lemon yellow. The inner part is lemon yellow with a yellowish chamois glow at the base. The glaucous foliage turns yellow and disappears some time after flowering. The bulb goes into dormancy.
Showcase this beautiful Big Smile tulip in a setting of forget-me-nots and aubrietas for example. Its sunny flower pairs well with the white and green flower of the Spring Green viridiflora tulip. To hide its absence in summer, consider planting its bulbs among perennials: lady's mantle, catmints, perennial geraniums and other agastaches will be good companions. With their range of colours, sturdy and resistant flowers, suitable for both flower beds and bouquets, late single tulips are often planted in gardens. These flowers are unparalleled for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny borders. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make beautiful cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Planting and care
Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), spacing them 10 cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Big Smile' tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
