Description

Tulipa 'Belicia' is a true delight. Its petals metamorphose throughout the flowering, which starts early in spring and lasts for several weeks. It blooms into a pale-yellow globular flower, then it opens up like a peony, unfolding petals that are pearly white with a dark pink edge. This variety is particularly suitable for forcing, and can also bloom indoors in winter.

Tulipa 'Belicia' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of 'Early doubles', whose main characteristic is to flower at almost the same height, at the top of rather short stems. 'Belicia', obtained in 2006 in the Netherlands, is a 'chameleon' variety, with changing colours, reaching a height of 45cm (18in) when in bloom. The flowers perch on stems well above the broadly lanceolate leaves. They are fully double, 10cm (4in) wide, open cup-shaped, and long-lasting. The flowering takes place in March-April, at the beginning of the tulip season. This double tulip evolves gradually: its petals are initially entirely pale-yellow, then a carmine edge appears and while the pink colour diffuses on the flower, the yellow fades to become white. It creates a palette of fantastic colours, crowned at the end of flowering by the opening of the petals revealing a beautiful yellow heart and black stamens.

This early blooming and long-lasting tulip is perfect for breaking the monotony of monochrome flower beds. It brings vibrancy to spring borders. Mix it with white, red or pink tulips, with blue bulbs (muscari, hyacinths, chionodoxa), or combine it with perennials whose flowers are late. You can also create pretty pots and containers for your balcony or patio. It is advisable to plant extra bulbs for cutting, as they make stunning cut flowers that last a long time in a vase. 'Belicia' is a good cultivar for winter forcing, allowing you to plan beautiful bouquets to offer for Valentine's Day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. Choose a sunny or a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in light, fertile, and well-drained soil. Plant 15 cm (6in) deep (the bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart (making sure they do not touch each other) to achieve a mass effect. Cut the flower stalks after flowering. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them. In regions with humid winters, store your tulip bulbs to avoid rotting.
