Description

This collection brings together two plants selected for the exceptional size of their flowers, as well as their vibrant colours, making it easy to create a truly spectacular display in May-June. It includes the Oriental Poppy Beauty of Livermere, with huge red flowers speckled with black, and the giant ornamental garlic Allium stipitatum White Giant, which boasts large pure white pompom blooms. Oriental poppies and ornamental garlics are excellent plants that successfully combine the delicacy and graphic beauty of their flowers. Easy to grow in well-drained sunny soil, they only dislike excessive winter moisture.

This collection consists of:

- 1x Papaver orientale Beauty of Livermere: particularly vigorous, this poppy develops stems 90 cm (35in) to 1 m (3ft) tall, and each flower stem bears a large single flower, approximately 13 cm (5in) in diameter, with deep red petals speckled with large black spots at the base. Established plants produce multiple flower stems, ensuring a succession of blooms for about 3 weeks. The foliage disappears after flowering.

- 3x Allium stipitatum White Giant: this selection forms an inflorescence that can exceed 1.20 m (4ft) in height, bearing an umbel of pure white flowers, measuring up to 20 cm (8in) in diameter.

Individually labelled.

This duo is perfect for large sunny borders, beds, and borders. It will pair perfectly with boxwood balls or boxwood-leaved honeysuckles shaped into topiaries. To enhance it, consider planting artemisias, lavenders, and nepetas with delicate blooms. In any case, accompany them with perennials or shrubs as these plants will fill the space left empty after the flowering of poppies and ornamental garlics.

Planting and care

The Oriental Poppy and the Allium are preferably planted before the end of October so that they have time to establish themselves. Give them a sunny spot in a well-prepared and loosened soil, well-drained, even a little rocky, but deep. Plant the garlic bulbs at a depth of 10 or 15 cm (4 or 6in), spaced 15 cm (6in) apart for the larger ones. Plant them at a depth of 10 cm (4in), spaced 7 cm (3in) apart for the smaller bulbs. Not very demanding, they are satisfied with fairly poor soils but they fear very wet soils in winter.
