Description

Hippeastrum 'Ambiance', known as amaryllis, is an indoor bulb with a spectacular shape. It blooms from December to May in clusters of giant flowers.

The white flowers are widely veined and finely bordered with dark red. The heart of the amaryllis is green and adorned with 6 long stamens. The flowers are perched on sturdy stems.

This 'Ambiance' variety has semi-evergreen foliage. At maturity, the amaryllis can reach a height of 30 to 45cm (12 to 18in). Place your 'Ambiance' amaryllis in a pot to beautify your interior. You can also grow it in the garden against a well-exposed wall, sheltered from cold winds. Amaryllis cannot tolerate frost. When cut, the flowers will form beautiful bouquets.

Planting and care

Hippeastrum 'Ambiance' thrives in the sun in any moist soil. For pot cultivation, leave 2cm (1in) around the bulb and use a heavy pot to prevent it from tipping under the weight of the amaryllis, which tends to lean towards the sun. Use light, well-drained soil, either neutral or slightly acidic. In a pot, leave half of the bulb above the ground to prevent the neck from getting wet during watering and rotting (this also provides more space for the soil). Plant your amaryllis bulbs from October to March, depending on the desired flowering period, keeping in mind that it takes 2 months between planting and flowering. After flowering, cut the flowers and let the foliage grow. At the end of summer, allow the soil to dry out and cut off the dry leaves. Replant the bulb 6 weeks later in fresh soil.
