I am very disappointed with the Gardenias upon arrival they were very beautiful, but after a few days the leaves dried up, the last young plant remaining, the leaves turned yellow and the buds turned black.

Description

Gardenia jasminoides 'Crown Jewel' is a magnificent cultivar that produces lovely double flowers with an enchanting fragrance. This gardenia has the unique characteristic of being hardy down to -10° C to 12° C (14° F to 10.4° F)!

This small bush remains evergreen. Its beautiful dark green glossy foliage creates an interesting contrast with the pure white of the flower, which becomes almost dazzling. It is this sparkling effect that undoubtedly inspired its name, "Crown Jewel". The flowering period is spread out from June to September.

The slow growth of 'Crown Jewel', which will not exceed 1 m (3.3 ft) at maturity, makes this bush a perfect candidate for pot cultivation on a terrace. This way, it can be stored indoors during winter in colder regions. A terrace is also the best way to enjoy its charming fragrance. If you choose to plant it in the ground, it is important to select a bright location but avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours. It is also essential to ensure the soil is kept moist throughout the growing season.

Planting and care

Plant Gardenia jasminoides 'Crown Jewel' in a partially shaded or sunny bed, but sheltered from the hottest rays of the day. The exposure is important because Gardenia loves warmth (not dryness) and the harsh rays of the sun can burn its foliage. To improve its hardiness by a few degrees, plant it in a sheltered spot from cold and dry winds, ensuring there is no stagnant moisture at its base in winter. On the other hand, it will need plenty of water during summer for its establishment. Therefore, choose a humus-bearing substrate lightened with non-limestone sand, coarse gravel, or clay pellets. In a pot, whether you are in an area with mild winters or not, it is wiser to store it in an unheated conservatory or a cold greenhouse.
