I planted this Gardenia ''Kleim's Hardy'' in Belgium on 5th February 2022, in a southwest-facing position. I used a mixture of 1/3 garden soil, 1/3 Rhine sand, and 1/2 heather soil, and watered it with rainwater. I also mulched it with pine bark. It flowered very well and started to shoot, but unfortunately, in early December 2022, it froze for 10 days in Belgium with temperatures ranging from -3, -4°C (24.8°F) to -9, -10°C (14°F) at the end of the period. There was also frost in early January, early February, early March, and early April 2023. Almost all the leaves of this Gardenia were scorched by the frost and remained dry on the bush. Currently, on 16th June 2023, there seems to be a "timid" regrowth of leaves. Unfortunately, this Gardenia is not hardy enough in Belgium. You can also read my opinion on the Gardenia ''Summer Snow'', which suffered the same frost damage or even worse. Patrick

Description

Gardenia jasminoides Kleim's Hardy is a new cultivar, as floriferous and fragrant as the species but hardy down to -12 °C!

A small, slow-growing shrub, Gardenia Kleim's Hardy is well-known for its sweet and refined fragrance as well as its hardiness. This American selection is indeed hardy down to -12 °C.

Its leaves, glossy and rounded, are dark green and evergreen but may become damaged and fall off at temperatures between -6 °C and -8 °C. Flowering from May to September, Gardenia 'Kleim's Hardy' produces large, white, star-shaped flowers, 5 cm (2 in) in diameter, with an enchanting fragrance.

Plant it in a partially shaded flowerbed or in a pot in a moist, humus-rich, and light soil. Exposure is important as Gardenia likes warmth (not drought) and the intense rays of the sun can scorch its leaves. Place it in partial shade, in a bright location, well protected from cold and dry winds. It has roughly the same requirements as camellias.
