Description

The Eucryphia x Intermedia Rostrevor is one of those bushes that have brought a touch of exoticism from their region of origin into our gardens. Although quite demanding, it is definitely worth it; its magnificent flowering, with its sweet scent of honey and lime, lasts for almost two months.

It is a columnar bush whose evergreen foliage seems to disappear during the summer under the impressive amount of flowers. Eucryphia Rostrevor is an interesting cross-breeding between two wild species. It has retained the hardiness of E.pinnatifolia and the extraordinary flowering of E. billardieri. Its relative hardiness allows it to withstand temperatures of down to -12°C. Therefore, it can be grown in the ground in areas where winters are milder.

It is a bush that rarely exceeds 6-7m (19 ft 8 in-23 ft) in height, and it grows slowly, allowing it to be planted in small gardens, particularly in urban areas where gardens are often sheltered from winds and shaded, which suits it very well. Trimmed every year, enthusiasts of original plants living in areas that are cold can grow it in a pot, provided they find a place to store it, such as a conservatory in the winter.

Planting and care

Plant your Eucryphia x Intermedia Rostrevor in a semi-shade or shaded location and choose a spot sheltered from the wind. Improve your soil with a generous amount of compost as it likes fresh, humus-bearing, acidic, and well-drained soils. It is also beneficial for this bush to surface with compost at the base and to apply a mulch of bark chips every year in spring. It tolerates moisture much better than drought, so make sure to water it in case of particularly dry summers, not in winter. You can also plant companion ground cover plants to limit its water needs. It must be protected from the cold in winter, especially if you are in a cooler climate. Pruning is not necessary due to its slow growth, but if you want to maintain a compact habit, choose to prune it in early spring after the risk of heavy frost. Pruning should be light as heavy pruning will irreversibly weaken the tree.
