Description

Eucalyptus crenulata or Crenate Gum Tree is native to Australia where it grows in wet to swampy soils along watercourses. It forms a small tree whose leaves are a beautiful silvery, ashy colour, ovate or heart-shaped and slightly dentate on the edges. They form a dense crown of highly ornamental and unique foliage. It is also appreciated for its spring flowering in white pompoms, its good hardiness, -12 to -15° (10.4 to 5 °F) C, perhaps more, and its ability to grow in very wet or heavy soils, even limestone. It enjoys full sun and also grows in ordinary, drier soil.

Eucalyptus crenulata is a large bush of the myrtle family, native to Victoria in Australia, with a very restricted range, northeast of Melbourne, to the Acheron River Valley. It grows there along watercourses, in moist to wet, even swampy and asphyxiating soils. It is also occasionally found on drier soils. It reaches 10 m (32 ft 10 in) in height and 5 to 6m (16 ft 5 in to 19 ft 8 in) in span at maturity with moderately rapid growth. The young shoots of this eucalyptus carry evergreen foliage, composed of heart-shaped or ovate leaves with crenate edges, blue-green, silvery and ashy in colour, opposite when they are juvenile and alternate at maturity. They are aromatic when crushed. Flowering occurs between April and June on plants a few years old. These are round, petal-less flowers composed of a multitude of cream-white stamens tightly packed like pompoms. They bloom between the leaves, grouped in 3s all along the shoots and are followed by the formation of large green fruits shaped like cones, turning brown when ripe. The grey-brown bark is rough and cracked.

Eucalyptus crenulata resists cold quite well, down to -15°C (5 °F), when mature. Eucalyptus are generally large consumers of water, even in winter, helping to dry out the soil. On the other hand, their resistance to summer drought is proven. The Eucalyptus crenulata tolerates all types of very heavy and asphyxiating soil. It brings a touch of exoticism to a medium to large garden, planted alone where its unique foliage is admired.

Planting and care

Eucalyptus crenulata is best planted at the beginning of spring in a cold region, and at the beginning of autumn in a dry and hot climate. Install it in a warm and sunny location. In most regions, you can plant it in open ground. Regularly water for the first two years, the bush requires no watering in summer once well established. Fertiliser is not recommended. Pruning is not necessary, and even discouraged, to let the unique habit of this superb eucalyptus express itself. Gum trees are useful for drying out wet lands, as they are large consumers of water even in winter. They are however resistant to drought once well established and generally do very well in a Mediterranean-type climate.
