Description

Chaenomeles x superba 'Red Joy' is a thorny and ornamental shrub with a bushy habit. In March-April, this Japanese quince is covered with a multitude of clusters of cherry-red double flowers. The honey-scented flowering appears before the leaves.

The flowering is replaced in autumn by decorative yellow fruits (inedible quinces). These fruits perfume the bush with their pleasant scent. Its foliage is deciduous. Measuring up to 8cm (3in) long, the leaves are dark green and shiny on the top.

As an adult, it can reach a height of 1.5m (5ft). It is vigorous and very hardy. This Chaenomeles can be grown as a specimen or in a mass planting. It can also be used as a hedge or as ground cover.

Planting and care

Chaenomeles x superba 'Red Joy' thrives in the sun. You can also grow it in partial shade. Plant it in ordinary soil, preferably moist but well-drained. It is a very easy plant to grow that tolerates limestone. When planting, mix your soil with compost. When grown as a hedge, space the plants 80cm (32in) apart. In flower beds, the plants should be spaced 40 to 60cm (16 to 24in) apart. This Japanese quince withstands pollution well. It also requires little watering as it is drought-resistant.
