Description

Chaenomeles x superba 'Cameo' is a thorny and ornamental bush.

In March-April, it is covered with a multitude of clusters of 2 to 4 soft salmon pink double flowers. The honey-scented flowering appears before the leaves. This flowering is replaced in autumn by decorative yellow fruits. These fruits perfume the bush with their pleasant fragrance. The foliage is deciduous. Measuring up to 8cm (3in) long, the leaves are dark green in colour, and shiny on the top.

At adulthood, Chaenomeles x superba 'Cameo' can reach a height of 1.5m (5ft). It is recognised as vigorous and very hardy. It can be cultivated as a standalone plant or in a mass planting. It can also be used as a hedge or ground cover.

Planting and care

Chaenomeles x superba 'Cameo' thrives in the sun. You can also grow it in partial shade. Plant it in ordinary, preferably moist but well-drained soil. It is a very easy plant to grow that tolerates limestone. When planting, mix your soil with compost. When grown as a hedge, space the plants 80cm (32in) apart. In borders, the plants should be spaced 40 to 60cm (16 to 24in) apart. This Japanese quince is resistant to pollution. It requires little watering as it is drought-resistant.
