Description
Japanese Quince Chaenomeles × superba Double Delice® Pure ‘Minchadfbd’ is charming with its compact, well-branched habit and completely thornless stems. From March, it heralds the arrival of spring by covering itself with a multitude of large, pure white double flowers. This refined flowering brightens the garden at a time when few shrubs are in bloom. Easy to grow, hardy and drought-tolerant, it adapts to many situations and fits perfectly into borders, low hedges or as a specimen plant.
Originating from the hybrid Chaenomeles × superba, itself a cross between Chaenomeles japonica and C. speciosa, this cultivar, Double Delice® Pure, has been selected for its ornamental qualities and ease of cultivation. Unlike many thorny Japanese quinces, this one bears thornless branches. The shrub reaches about 1.50 m in height by 1 m in width at 10 years old, forming a dense and harmonious bush. Its deciduous, fresh green foliage appears after flowering and stays on the branches until autumn. Producing no fruit, the shrub concentrates all its energy on its spring bloom.
Chaenomeles × superba ‘Minchadfbd’ is part of the Double Delice® range, developed by Hortival Diffusion, a French specialist in varietal innovation. It was introduced to the market in 2025. This variety perfectly illustrates the breeder’s expertise, which aims to revisit garden classics to make them even more attractive, easy to grow and suited to today’s gardeners’ expectations.
Japanese quince Double Delice® Pure easily finds its place in many arrangements: as a specimen on a lawn, in a low hedge along a path, mixed with other small shrubs in front of a loose hedge or integrated into a spring border. Its dazzling white flowering blends beautifully with the bright yellow of Forsythia 'Marée d'Or', the soft pink of Prunus incisa ‘Kojo-no-mai’, or the pastel tones of Oriental hellebores. For a more vibrant note at its base, you can add Muscari armeniacum and Anemone blanda mix. These associations create a fresh, bright and low-maintenance display.

Planting and care
Chaenomeles x speciosa Double Delice® Pure thrives best in full sun, where it is more floriferous. You can also grow it in partial shade in the sunniest regions. Plant it in ordinary, well-drained, rather moist soil, even though it tolerates drought well after 3 years of growing. It is a very easy plant to grow and also tolerates chalk. When planting, mix your soil with potting compost.
When grown as a hedge, space the plants 80 cm apart. In a border, plants should be spaced 40 to 60 cm apart. This Japanese quince is resistant to pollution. It requires very little maintenance, apart from occasional shortening of the longest shoots in spring, as they sometimes become less floriferous.

In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
