Description

The Heucherella 'Solar Power' is extraordinary for its golden foliage marbled with brown. This semi-evergreen foliage turns green in the sun and remains yellow in the shade.

From May to June, cascading cream-white flowers appear. These flowers can be cut to make beautiful bouquets. With very good hardiness, the Heucherella 'Solar Power' can reach a height of 35 cm (14in) when fully mature.

This interesting ornamental plant for 10 months out of 12 can be found in shaded rockeries as well as borders. It is also a good ground cover thanks to its spreading habit.

The Heucherella is a cross-breeding between Heucheres and Tiarelles.

Planting and care

Plant the Heucherella in shade or partial shade during spring or autumn. This hardy perennial is easy to grow and thrives in good garden soil. That's why it should be planted in light and rich, moist but well-drained soil. Reserve a depth of 20 cm (8in). Space the Heucherellas 30 cm (12in) apart. During winter, the Heucherella renews its foliage, so it is best to cut back the previous year's leaves from January to February. The roots tend to lift, so it is necessary to mulch every year or possibly transplant and replant in September and October, ensuring that the collar is just at ground level. Be careful to maintain some moisture in summer, especially in the first year.
