Ordered in a pot this autumn, it arrived in a small pot, and really tiny, it almost disappeared over the winter but this spring it has already produced several very pretty leaves.

Description
The Heucherella 'Golden Zebra' is a remarkably colourful perennial, with evergreen foliage that is generally two-tone, changing slightly in colour throughout the seasons. This perennial, resulting from the cross-breeding of a heuchera and a tiarella, forms a variegated cushion, from which a pinkish flowering spike emerges in late spring. Its leaves create a lacework where the acidic green and golden yellow contrast with the coppery orange, russet brown, and purplish red, depending on the season.
This Heucherella 'Golden Zebra' is an herbaceous perennial of the Saxifragaceae family. Its foliage persists in winter. The plant forms a dense, slightly domed and spreading clump, reaching about 40 cm (16in) in all directions. Its foliage consists of broadly triangular leaves, 4 to 10 cm (2 to 4in) long, divided into 7 to 9 dentate lobes along the edges. In the middle of summer, they have a golden yellow colour with dark red-brown mottling at the centre. Flowering generally occurs in May. The long-lasting flowers are grouped in compact spikes, carried by thin and villous stems, reaching a height of 50-60 cm (20-24in). This flowering of tiny white bell-shaped flowers each with a pink calyx gives the impression of foam.
The Heucherella 'Golden Zebra' prefers wooded environments with a humid atmosphere and soil. It will naturally find its place in the understory, alongside ferns, Impatiens balfouri, hostas, and astilbes. It is also a good plant for perennial borders or in a slightly moist rock garden, always in shade. It can also be used as a waterside plant. It will thrive in containers or pots sheltered from direct sunlight. In this case, it should be planted in a well-drained potting mix with moderate fertilisation, and watering should be monitored in summer and reduced in winter. Potted plants will need protection from cold winter winds.

Planting and care
Plant the Heucherella in shade or partial shade during spring or autumn. This hardy perennial appreciates a good garden soil enriched with compost, preferably non-calcareous, always slightly moist even in summer. Space the heucherellas 30 cm (12in) apart. During winter, the heucherella renews its foliage, so it is best to cut the leaves from the previous year from January to February. The roots tend to lift, so it is necessary to mulch every year or possibly uproot and replant in September and October, placing the collar just at ground level. Ensure that the soil remains sufficiently moist, especially during the summer heat which can be fatal to young plants lacking water. In a pot, it requires regular watering throughout the summer.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a (East Coast and Midlands: Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny, Portlaoise). It will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to regions in USDA Zone 9a, such as the East Coast and Midlands, including Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise.
This will vary depending on where you live:
- On the west coast and in the northwest (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal and Westport), it will be delayed by one to two weeks compared to the given dates, due to stronger Atlantic winds and less spring sunshine.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (the Wicklow Mountains, the Macgillycuddy's Reeks, Connemara and Killarney), flowering will be delayed by two to three weeks. Flowering mainly occurs between May and July, with the limiting factors being less frost and more of the excessive humidity, strong winds and lack of sunshine that are characteristic of these areas.
