Description

Monarda 'Heidelerche'is a herbaceous bee balm belonging to the lamiaceae family. It bears 5 to 6 cm (2in) wide flowers in July to August, arranged in terminal whorls. These two-lipped flowers are pink-purple and nectar-rich, attracting bees and butterflies.

The leaves of the 'Heidelerche' Bee Balm are 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) long, deciduous, lanceolate and toothed, green with prominent veins. They are very aromatic leaves, used for scented sachets and potpourri. Once mature, Bee Balm 'Heidelerche' forms beautiful bushy clumps, reaching 80cm (32in) high, with few suckers.

Monarda 'heidelerche' is hardy and easy to grow, it thrives in full sun or partial shade, in any moist, rich, and well-drained soil. Plant it in the background of a romantic garden, a flower meadow, or a mixed border, alongside lobelias, bellflowers, knotweeds, and grasses.

Planting and care

Monarda Heidelerche thrives in full sun and tolerates light shade. Plant it in fairly rich, light, moist to damp, but well-drained soil. It does not tolerate soil drought, even for a few days. Do not let the soil dry out in summer and protect it from excessive winter wet. Remove faded flowers to prolong blooming. Cut back the dried clump once it is no longer decorative, in late winter at the latest. Bergamot is prone to powdery mildew during hot and dry summers. It can also be attacked by slugs and snails in spring.
