Description

Monarda fistulosa menthifolia or Wild Bergamot is a perennial plant forming a bushy clump. Its branched stems bear beautiful flowers for up to 8 weeks from August to September. The nectar-rich flowers are 2 to 3 cm (1in) long and a lovely mauve with purple-tinged bracts, arranged in terminal whorls.

Monarda menthifolia has aromatic foliage, resembling mint but with a citrus scent. That's why it's called Mint-leafed Monarda. The deciduous leaves are 4 to 10 cm (2 to 4in) long and ovate, green with a purple hue. At maturity, the monarda can reach 1 m (3ft) high with a spread of 45 cm (18in).

Native to North America, it is a plant with excellent hardiness. It adds charm to romantic flowerbeds and is very attractive as a cut flower thanks to its ornamental flowers. It is worth noting that Monarda fistulosa contains essential oils similar to those of thyme and tea can be made using its fresh or dried leaves or flowers.

Planting and care

Monarda fistulosa Menthifolia thrives in full sun and tolerates light shade. Plant it in fairly rich, light, moist to wet but well-drained soil. It cannot tolerate soil drought even for a few days, or the slightest trace of salinity in the soil. Do not let the soil dry out in summer, but also protect it from excessive winter wet. Remove faded flowers. Wild Bergamot is prone to powdery mildew during hot and dry summers and may be attacked by slugs and snails in spring.
