More information

This small lavender blooms early, from the month of June, and for 3 months if the soil does not dry out too much. Its sturdy spikes of a beautiful deep violet shade open in abundance, above evergreen, aromatic foliage that does not discolour in winter. The beautiful greyish green foliage will be even lighter if the soil is dry and the summer is hot. Lavender Blue Jeans is well suited to pot cultivation. In the garden, it will thrive in very well-drained soil, in full sun. Hardiness: -15 °C.

Description

Lavandula angustifolia "Blue Jeans" is a dwarf variety of lavender, also known as English lavender, which stands out for its particularly early and prolonged flowering. Covered with short, highly coloured spikes, which are not quite purple, this plant resembles a true ball of flowers. Its dense and compact vegetation, as well as its particularly abundant flowering, are accompanied by a characteristic lavender scent. The spikes are carried by long, leafy stems emerging from evergreen grey-green foliage that is not very susceptible to diseases. A very pretty variety to flower on the patio or in the garden, in full sun and well-drained soil!

Lavandula angustifolia is a plant from the Lamiaceae family, a relative of sages, thymes, and rosemary. The 'Blue Jeans' variety is more compact and has an even more generous flowering. It is a bushy shrub of very small size, about 40 cm (16in) in all directions, with a very compact, dense, and vigorous habit, which quickly forms a rounded tuft. Its evergreen foliage in winter is composed of small, narrow, aromatic leaves of a beautiful grey-green colour. Flowering of this lavender begins in June in average climates, as early as May in the Mediterranean region. FLoral stems emerge from the foliage bearing dense and branched spikes composed of a multitude of tiny flowers. These spikes, which are violet-dark blue, are well-scented and nectar-rich. In lavenders, it is actually the coloured calyxes surrounding the flowers that influence the perception of the flower colour when viewed from a distance. This 'Blue Jeans' lavender is a hardy variety, but like most other lavenders, it needs to be planted in full sun in a very well-drained (even rocky) soil, on a slope or in a rockery. In a sunny and warm location, its silver-green foliage will be more radiant and its flowers will exude an intense fragrance.

An ornamental and Mediterranean plant par excellence, lavender can be used in flower beds, as a specimen plant, in borders, rockeries, pots, coastal areas, and even as a low-flowering hedge. Lavender 'Blue Jeans' can be associated with small grasses such as Stipa tenuifolia or andropogons, which, with their tousled appearance, will contrast with its rounded shape and create a harmonious association with natural charm. It will also work wonders when paired with sages, perennial flax, other lavenders, and dry-loving spurge. Additionally, you can create beautiful containers to place on the patio or balcony.

Properties: As lavender is a very nectar-rich plant, it contributes to the conservation of bees: the nectar from its flowers attracts bees, making some of the best honey.  The plant can be distilled to obtain highly sought-after essential oil for perfume and aromatherapy. Its numerous therapeutic properties are still widely used: its essential oil has antiseptic, antispasmodic, healing, cleansing, diuretic, and other properties.

Planting and care

In nature, lavenders always live in poor and stony, dry, perfectly drained environments, in full sun. These plants dislike summer rain, which makes them sick and causes them to disappear, as they are very sensitive to fungal diseases induced by the combination of heat and soil moisture. In winter, they require good drainage, and in summer, they need to be kept dry. Lavender will age better in poor soil, as its growth will be slower and it will have less tendency to become bare at the base. To limit this phenomenon, pruning should be carried out from a young age, after flowering or in autumn, just above the first buds that can be seen on the wood. Lavenders never regrow on old wood. The clump will thus branch out more and more, remaining compact, eventually forming beautiful round and dense cushions. When planting, provide them with what they like: gravel, stones, coarse sand, but definitely not potting soil, compost, or fertiliser!

When cultivated in a pot, lavender will benefit from slightly spaced out waterings in summer, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. Do not place a saucer under the pot.
