Description

Iris germanica with rhizomes have long fan-shaped leaves that can be evergreen. These European irises bloom for a few weeks in May/June with bearded flowers that can reach 6 to 8cm (2 to 3in) in diameter in the form of small clusters. The flowers are a soft powder pink colour.

The plant measures 50/60cm (20/24in) in height and is perfectly resistant to all types of climates. It should be exposed to full sun, in rather dry and well-drained soil.

The 'Blushing Pink' iris is planted shallowly, leaving the rhizome just above ground level. Add sand when the soil is too moist and place the rhizomes on small mounds.

Iris can be placed among perennials or in front of bushes. It is better to scatter them in groups of 3 or alone instead of creating homogeneous iris beds. Irises are particularly well suited for flowering very sunny borders.

Planting and care

The 'Blushing Pink' iris should be planted shallowly, with the rhizome exposed at ground level. Add sand when the soil is too wet and place the rhizomes on small mounds. Ensure good drainage to prevent the irises from rotting. During summer, this iris should be watered 1 to 2 times a month. At the end of flowering, they should be pruned by cutting the flower stalks to 10cm (4in) above the ground. Damaged leaves should only be removed in autumn. It is not recommended to provide too much nitrogen as it weakens the plant and increases the number of leaves at the expense of flowers. The iris can be susceptible to heterosporiosis, a disease identified by oval brown spots. To prevent it, treat the irises with Bordeaux mixture at the beginning of the growing season. Every 4 years in summer, divide the clumps by uprooting the entire plant. Transplantation should be done in a location without irises for at least a year. Take the most beautiful young plants from the rhizome, usually those on the outer edge.
