Well arrived after over a thousand km, perfect packaging, the soil still slightly damp, meticulous care, even though still in winter dormancy, one can see that the young plant is in good health.

Description

Hosta 'Frosted Dimples' is a medium-sized variety with thick, blue-grey foliage that appears powdery.  Each slightly inward-curved leaf is barely marginate with cream-white. This sturdy plant forms a dense and well-groomed mound, which is covered in summer with almost white flower spikes. Neglected by gastropods, this variety will make beautiful borders or even magnificent groundcover when planted en masse in damp shade. It also grows very well in pots.

Hosta 'Frosted Dimples' is a deciduous perennial plant belonging to the Hostaceae family, or the liliaceae family according to classical classification. In spring it displays, a growth habit of small circular clumps, with very regular vegetation. It is one of the many hybrids obtained from species native to Japan and China. The plant will reach a height of 35 cm (14in) for the foliage and will spread to 70 cm (28in) after several years. Its longevity is excellent. It has heart-shaped leaves with deeply ridged and very thick lamina, pruinose blue-grey with a fine cream border, which is absent in certain areas of the lamina. The leaves have a ridged appearance, their border is rolled up, and their tip is pointed. Pale green flower stalks rise through the foliage and display bell-shaped white flowers in loose clusters, slightly tinged with lavender, in July-August.

The Hosta 'Frosted Dimples' will blend well in partial shade with helxine, alchemillas, Japanese ferns, and eucomis, creating an elegant and surprising effect, requiring minimal maintenance. This hosta will also thrive in a border, a damp and shaded rockery, in the company of columbines and lungworts, or even small violets. All hostas grow well in pots and can remain in the same container for several years. As long as the foliage is not too dense, you can water the pot from the top. Then place a saucer under the pot to maintain constant moisture in summer.

Planting and care

Hostas can be planted in spring or autumn. Hostas prefer a deep, humus-rich, loose soil, which is preferably neutral to acidic and moist to wet throughout the year. Plant them in partial shade or partial shade and in a sheltered position away from strong winds.

Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix half compost with crumbled soil, partially backfill, and place your plant in a clump so that the top of the clump is covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a fertiliser (bonemeal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Ensure that the collar is well above ground level. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to help the establishment of your plant. Also, water regularly in case of a dry summer.

With their preference for humid areas, slugs and snails never stray too far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appetising to slugs, these plants must be protected from gastropods. Protect your hostas by surrounding them with granules approved in organic agriculture, eggshells, coffee grounds, mulch, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in the fight against gastropods because, unlike chickens, they do not dig up the soil and do not attack the lush green shoots of young plants. Finally, some plants have a repellent odour for slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.
