Description
Hosta sieboldiana is an imposing Japanese perennial with thick, subtly blue-green leaves. It will undoubtedly bring a lush, even exotic, aspect to woodland gardens. Its white-lilac flowering, in June-July, adds brightness to shaded or semi-shaded beds.
Also known as Funkia, this beautiful perennial belongs to the Asparagaceae family (it was formerly classified in the Liliaceae family), and makes a good ground cover. Under good conditions, the clump can reach 60cm (24in) tall (1m (3ft) in bloom) and 1.2m (4ft) wide. The plant produces upright stems carrying bell-shaped white flowers, shaded with mauve, which gradually turn pure white. The foliage, thick and puckered, is less appreciated by slugs than in other hostas. Heart-shaped and veined, the leaves can measure up to 50cm (20in) long. They are larger and more ovate in this variety than in Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans (= Hosta 'Elegans').
Siebold's Hosta will thrive in any deep, humus-rich and fertile soil. While these plants can tolerate short periods of drought, they prefer the substrate to remain moist, even wet, while being perfectly drained: excess water can cause rotting of the large fleshy roots. This species thrives very well in shade or semi-shade. It can also be grown in light sun, but in constantly moist soil, otherwise the foliage may wilt or dry out. Excellent results can also be obtained in pots. Perfect for brightening up your terrace or balcony! Just make sure to water them, but without overdoing it. Mature clumps can be divided in spring or autumn, by separating large fragments of the fleshy and sometimes quite tough clumps.
It can be happily associated with other well-known shade plants, such as ferns or Epimedium, as well as rarer ones like Saruma henryi, Kirengeshoma palmata... that appreciate the same conditions but offer very different foliage to play with different forms.

Planting and care
Hostas are planted in spring or autumn. Hostas like a deep, fertile, humus-rich, loose soil, preferably neutral to acid (at least low in limestone), moist to wet throughout the year. Plant them in partial shade or dappled shade and in a sheltered position away from strong winds.
Prepare a planting hole of 20cm (8in) x 20cm (8in) x 20cm (8in). If your soil is heavy, mix equal parts of compost with crumbled soil, partially refill the hole and place your potted plant so that the top of the root ball is covered with 3cm (1in) of soil. The addition of a base fertiliser (such as bonemeal) will nourish your plant during its rooting period without the risk of burning. Make sure to position the collar well above ground level. Firm the soil and water generously to eliminate air pockets. If the weather is dry, you will need to water regularly for a few weeks to facilitate the establishment of your plant. Also, water regularly in dry summers.
With their shared preference for moist locations, slugs and snails never stay far from hostas. Even though blue or variegated hostas often have thicker and tougher foliage, which is less appetising to slugs, these plants must be protected from gastropods. Protect your Hostas by surrounding them with eggshells, coffee grounds, mulch, or any dry and rough natural substance that repels them. Hedgehogs are the gardener's best allies in combating gastropods, as unlike chickens, they do not till the soil and do not attack the young plants' green shoots. Finally, some plants have a repulsive odour for slugs, such as wormwood and garlic.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
