Description
Heuchera 'Palace Purple' (Heuchera micrantha) is a perennial plant with charming, decorative purple foliage, often evergreen in winter. Its leaves, evolving from purple to bronze, bring depth to flower beds and borders. This hardy variety easily finds its place in the garden, in the ground, or in a pot on the balcony. This undemanding heuchera tolerates heat and sun but thrives in partial shade in humus-bearing, moist soils.
Belonging to the Saxifragaceae family, Heuchera micrantha 'Palace Purple' originates from North America. This cultivar was introduced in the 1980s and was awarded the title of "Perennial Plant of the Year" in 1991. The plant forms a clump of leaves 40-45 cm in height and width. Its foliage, often likened to that of a maple, displays an intense purple colour on top, with a reddish underside. The leaves, more or less evergreen in winter depending on the climate, measure about 5 to 7 cm wide. The 'Palace Purple' Heuchera blooms between June and August. Its small, white, discreet flowers form airy panicles that rise above the foliage, they are not the main attraction of this plant. This variety's growth is relatively fast; it prefers rich, well-drained soils. 'Palace Purple' Heuchera tolerates full sun in cooler climates but prefers partial shade in warmer regions.
Heuchera 'Palace Purple' is well suited for edging flower beds, in combination with other plants for partial shade. It pairs well with golden grasses like Carex elata ‘Aurea’, or delicate flowering plants like Astilbe arendsii ‘Fanal’. It can also be combined with other Heuchera varieties in matching colours, such as 'Berry Smoothie' with pink foliage, or ‘Marmalade’ with tones of pink and bronzed orange. It complements perennials like Alchemilla mollis, with its chartreuse green foliage creating an interesting contrast with the purple foliage of 'Palace Purple'.
Heucheras with trembling stems and tiny bells were very fashionable in the 19th century in all European gardens. The Impressionist painters named them 'Painter's Despair', having probably tried to represent them in vain.

Planting and care
Sowing:
Sow Heuchera seeds from March to June on the surface of seed compost and cover them with a pinch of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at 18-21°C or enclose it in a transparent polythene bag. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged. Do not exclude light, as it promotes germination, which will take between 21 and 60 days.
When the young plants are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them in cooler conditions until they are big enough to be planted outdoors. Once the young plants have grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Plant them in the ground or in pots outside, in well-worked and prepared soil, spacing them 40 cm apart. Choose a location where the soil stays moist in summer, in non-scorching sun or partial shade.
Cultivation:
Easy to care for, 'Palace Purple' thrives in all moist, well-drained soils, in partial shade, and must be protected from intense sunlight and arid situations. Plant them in humus-bearing soil that retains moisture well, possibly providing mulch. Sandy and poor soils should be avoided. Also, avoid placing them near overly vigorous perennials.
Heucheras have relatively shallow root systems, so you should plant them a bit lower than the crown (point of origin of the foliage). After a few years of growth or when dividing them, replant them slightly deeper, taking care to remove woody parts.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
