Description

Originally from Asia and Europe to North Africa, epimediums are excellent ground covers for shade. Western species are more tolerant but less showy in terms of flowers, and can withstand conditions such as dry shade and heavy or limestone soils. Asian species, which are more aesthetically pleasing, prefer moist soils, especially in summer, and rich in humus. They thrive in shaded areas.

Flowering occurs from March for the earliest ones to June for the latest ones. Over 90% of the species have evergreen foliage that regenerates in spring, giving way to young decorative foliage often speckled or marbled with brown, copper, or red, depending on the varieties.

The Epimedium wushanense 'Caramel' is a giant variety that exceeds 1m (3ft) in height. Its long decorative leaves are speckled with purple at the beginning of the season.

In spring, its numerous arching spikes of flowers, which can exceed 1.30m (4ft) in height, are adorned with coppery flowers with a brown centre. This imposing variety can be paired with Rodgersia aesculifolia, Solomon's seal (Polygonatum multiflorum), or large ferns.
