Description

Dianthus Sunflor Evert is a remarkable variety of perennial double carnation, appreciated for its compact structure and long, intense flowering. This selection from the Sunflor range stands out for its early and abundant flowering, with many delicately scented flowers adding a touch of elegance to the garden from April to September. Whether you grow it in the ground or in a pot, this evergreen perennial plant is easy to maintain and can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F). The vibrant and robust, bright pink flowers of 'Evert' bloom throughout the season. Its cushion-shaped growth thrives even in dry or rocky soils, and it flourishes when exposed to full sun.

Dianthus Sunflor® 'Evert' belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family, which includes plants such as soapwort, sagina, and baby's breath. It is one of the many varieties resulting from cross-breeding between Dianthus plumarius and Dianthus caryophyllus. Dianthus plumarius is a European perennial plant, the main ancestor of various old and modern varieties of carnation. Dianthus caryophyllus, of Mediterranean origin, has passed on its wonderful clove fragrance and tolerance to limestone and dry soils. The Sunflor 'Evert' carnation grows quickly, reaching a maximum height and spread of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in). It forms a dense clump and produces wide, round, double flowers 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, carried on short and often branched stems from April to October. Its evergreen and leathery leaves are a beautiful grey-blue with pointed and smooth edges.

The Sunflor® Dianthus collection is extremely versatile and unique. It is available in a wide range of colours, flower shapes, and plant types. All the varieties in this selection flower continuously from spring to autumn, withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F), and have a compact growth habit. The plants can be used outdoors as well as indoors. The fragrant and colourful flowers are long-lasting and perfect for making small bouquets or buttonholes.

The Sunflor® Hybrid Dianthus is a magnificent plant ideal for terraces, balcony boxes, borders, slopes, and rockeries. It is fairly drought-tolerant but needs lots of sunlight. Its superb and charming, scented flowers look great everywhere. The different Sunflor varieties, such as Sinclair, Megan, Evert, Cosmos, or Beetle, will illuminate your garden with their vibrant colours. They blend beautifully with other varieties of Carnations (Dianthus plumarius), Rock Roses, Silene schafta Splendens, Arabis, Wall Bellflower, Moss Phlox (Phlox subulata), Aubrietia, Erigeron karvinskianus, Rock Soapwort (Saponaria ocymoides), or bloody cranesbill geraniums (Geranium sanguineum). To recreate an old fashioned atmosphere you can create a border of these adorable carnations alongside peonies and old roses. A harmonious association can be created by combining Sunflor® Dianthus with Munstead Lavender, Pincushion Pink Scabiosa, Dwarf Gaillardia, and Sunray Tickseed. To create a vibrant and colourful garden, you can combine them with annual plants like petunias, lobelias, and garden verbenas (Verbena Endurascape), offering a dazzling range of vibrant colours. Cosmos and osteospermums could extend the flowering period and add an attractive floral touch.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible into pots, balcony boxes, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

Plant Dianthus Sunflor Evert in the spring, in ordinary, permeable and humus-bearing, rocky, clayey or limestone, dry to moist and well-drained soil. A gravel-rich soil will be perfect. This plant is quite hardy, down to -10°C (14°F) and prefers a very sunny exposure.

Cut back slightly after flowering to promote more foliage and a denser habit, especially if your carnation is planted in rich soil. In poor soil, apply a balanced fertiliser in March.
