Couldn't enjoy them, they didn't bloom. I hope they'll bloom in 2024.

Description

The Coreopsis grandiflora 'Louis d'Or' is a robust variety of Tickseed, also known as Coreope or Coreopside. This beautiful perennial is distinguished by its fluffy double daisy-like flowers, in a vibrant golden yellow, which bloom throughout the summer on a tall and elegant plant, both in flower beds and in bouquets. This undemanding and generous perennial thrives in the sun, in a light and well-drained soil.

The Coreopsis grandiflora belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is native to North America, from California to New Mexico (all states to the east), and up to the Great Lakes. 'Louis d'Or' is a cultivar with double heads, whose rounded and slightly loose growth habit is very similar to that of the single flower type. This rhizomatous perennial plant forms a shrub that reaches a height of 60 to 80 cm (24 to 32in), with a diameter of 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20in), which may sometimes require staking in windy or rainy climates. The flowering period is from June to August. The solitary heads are 6 cm (2in) in diameter and are borne on slightly hairy stems. The foliage, a beautiful intense green, is deciduous. The leaves, opposite, lanceolate, entire, sometimes incised at the base, almost sessile (without petiole), measure 10 cm (4in) in length. This perennial spreads quite rapidly through rhizomes.

The 'Louis d'Or' Tickseed is not fond of winter humidity and heavy soils. This plant requires full sun to flower well. The Coreopsis grandiflora is a versatile perennial. It will thrive in a raised bed or on a slope alongside wallflowers, Damask nigellas, and wild flax, in an herbaceous border with Teucrium chamaedrys, or x lucidrys, thyme, and santolines. It is perfect for greening a meadow or a slightly wild area of the garden. This plant blooms continuously from the first year. For a beautiful summer display, whether in the ground or in a large pot with very little water, it can be paired with Calamintha glandulosa and Nepeta 'Dawn to dusk'. Lastly, it makes a lovely flower for summer bouquets, and brings sunshine indoors.

Planting and care

The grandiflora coreopsis plant and its varieties don't do well in winter humidity and heavy soils. To thrive, they need full sunlight and a well-draining, slightly acidic, neutral or slightly chalky soil that is light and porous, such as gravelly or sandy soil. This kind of soil helps the plant produce beautiful flowers and live a long time. It's important to remove faded flowers regularly and promote autumn reblooming in July to encourage more flowering and prolong the plant's lifespan. You can also divide exhausted shrubs every three years to keep them healthy.
