Description
Centranthus ruber Kempenhof, or Pink Valerian, is a perennial herbaceous, clump-forming plant. From July to September its upright stems bear beautiful fragrant, pink flowers in compact clusters. These funnel-shaped flowers are 1 to 2 cm (0 to 1in) long.
Pink Valerian has deciduous foliage, composed of lanceolate (lance-shaped), entire, and slightly toothed, dark green leaves, 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) long. The lower leaves are petiolate (attached to the stem by short stalks), while the upper leaves are sessile (directly attached to the stem). At maturity, Centranthus Kempenhof can reach a height of 80 cm (32in).
It is a very hardy perennial originally from the Mediterranean which attracts bees and other pollinators and self-seeds. You can grow it in flowerbeds, on dry slopes, or in rock gardens. It is sometimes used to decorate old walls and can grow in cracks or gaps everywhere.

Planting and care
Valerian likes the sun, it can tolerate partial shade but will not flower as well. It is drought-resistant. Plant it in well-drained, poor and not too fertile soil. Regularly remove faded flowers to prevent self-seeding. This will prevent the plant from becoming invasive and promote reblooming. Renew the plants every 2 to 3 years. Valerian is resistant to diseases and parasites.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.

- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
