Description

This very beautiful and rare species, native to the mountains of the southern United States and Mexico, grows on shady and cool slopes on a rocky soil covered with humus.

The foliage forms a rosette near the ground from which flower stems emerge in late spring slender, bearing at their ends golden yellow flowers measuring 4 to 5cm (2in) in diameter.  These are the longest spurs that can be seen in columbines.
