Description

Lobivia cardenasiana is a small cactus native to Bolivia, prized for its stunning pink flowers that bloom on its dark green body. With slow growth and a compact size, this variety thrives indoors as long as it receives plenty of light. During the warmer months, it can be moved to a balcony or terrace. Easy to grow and low-maintenance, this rather rare plant is perfect for all cactus enthusiasts.

Lobivia cardenasiana, also known by the scientific name Echinopsis ancistrophora subsp. cardenasiana, belongs to the Cactaceae family. Native to the Tarija region of Bolivia, this species grows at altitudes between 2,250 and 3,150 metres. It thrives in rocky outcrops among grasses, mainly on south-east-facing slopes, often in association with Rebutia heliosaLobivia cardenasiana has a flattened to spherical stem, reaching up to 8 cm in diameter, with a dark green colour and slightly notched ribs. The central spines, usually just one, are straight to slightly hooked, white-brown with a darker tip, while the backwards-curved radial spines are creamy and can grow up to 1.5 cm long. The diurnal flowering, which is unscented, occurs from June onwards. It produces bright pink to magenta flowers, measuring between 8 and 12 cm long and up to 7 cm in diameter, with a throat often tinged greenish-white. Fruits rarely form in cultivation and never indoors. They are oblong, green to purple. The species name honours Bolivian botanist Martín Cárdenas.

Lobivia cardenasiana is ideal for a shelf, a bright windowsill, or a well-lit desk. Its striking form and large, vibrant flowers add character to a bohemian or minimalist decor. To showcase it best, grow it in a raw terracotta pot. You can place it next to an Echeveria 'Perle von Nurnberg' with rosy hues or an Aeonium haworthii, which resembles a cluster of houseleeks.

Location

Place the Lobivia cardenasiana in a spot with plenty of light, such as near a south or west-facing window. Avoid areas prone to cold draughts or sudden temperature changes. It is recommended to protect it from midday sun behind glass to prevent scorching. In winter, a dry rest period at temperatures between 5 and 7°C promotes optimal flowering in spring. As with most cacti, it is advisable to place and handle the plant with care due to its thorns.

Maintenance and care

During the growth period (spring and summer), water moderately once a week, ensuring the substrate dries out well between waterings. In winter, drastically reduce water intake, watering once a month or less, to respect the plant's dormant period. Misting can be harmful: it increases humidity around the plant.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, preferably in early spring, before the resumption of active growth. The pot should be only slightly larger than the cactus, otherwise it may become exhausted.
Use a specific cactus mix, composed of light potting soil enriched with coarse sand or perlite to ensure effective drainage.
Use a liquid fertiliser specially formulated for cacti, low in nitrogen (NPK 5-10-10), to encourage flowering. Apply the fertiliser once a month from spring to summer. Suspend all feeding in autumn and winter.

Houseplant care

Remove faded flowers and damaged parts to maintain a tidy appearance and prevent potential infections.

Disease and pest advice

This young plant is robust if its growing requirements are met, but it is sensitive to excess water. Mealybugs and red spider mites are fairly common parasitic pests in greenhouses, in confined, warm and dry conditions.
