More information

The 'Lacrima' Weeping Peach is a self-fertile variety that stands out from other peaches with its original weeping habit, giving it a beautiful decorative effect that is nevertheless practical, as harvests are facilitated by its trailing branches. The large-sized peaches are pear-shaped, red-orange with yellow flesh, and sweet. Harvest takes place when they are ripe, at the end of August.

Description

The Weeping Peach 'Lacrima' is a self-fertile variety of peach with large fruit, reddish orange skin and delicious, sweet yellow flesh that can be harvested at the end of August. The peculiarity of this peach tree is its weeping habit, which gives it a very attractive decorative effect and makes harvesting easier with its trailing branches.

The species name "persica" was given to the peach tree because it was believed to originate from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms of the peach tree originate from northern China. It appeared in Europe in the 6th century and experienced significant development in the 19th century. From then on, numerous selections aimed at improving the fruit's taste qualities took place. Like many fruit trees, the Weeping Peach 'Lacrima' prefers light, rich and deep soils, and it does not tolerate excessive water or heavy and compact soils. A sunny location sheltered from the wind will protect the flowering and help with fruiting, even though its late flowering protects it from spring frosts.

This tree has a weeping habit with many horizontal branches, giving it an elegant silhouette, which is rare among peach trees. Its deciduous foliage is a vibrant green and emits a slight almond scent. Its leaves are long, measuring 8 to 15cm (3 to 6in) in length and 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in width, with short petioles. Its pale pink flowering occurs late, at the end of March, making it suitable for cultivation in regions north of the Loire River. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile. The fruiting results in large peaches with red skin and yellow, delicious and sweet flesh. This tree does not require too much maintenance and responds well to pruning.

Peaches can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, salty, flambéed, frozen or thawed. They pair very well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in numerous recipes, including jams, compotes, pastries,...

For transport reasons, our tallest scions may be pruned before shipping. They are suitable for all common training sizes: cordons, espaliers, goblets, half-standards and low standards, except for high standards. If you would like more information or advice on training your fruit trees, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Planting and care

The 'Lacrima' Weeping Peach Tree is preferably planted from October to December. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, to moisten the entire root ball through capillarity. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole, fill with a mixture of soil and compost. Gently tamp down around the base of the tree as you fill, ensuring that the roots are in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

The 'Lacrima' Weeping Peach Tree has a semi-taproot system. It thrives in fairly deep soils. It also prefers a light and well-draining soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the following spring after planting, a first training pruning will be welcome. Keep only the branches that will form the framework of the tree (about 5 branches). Fruits appear on one-year-old branches. The wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For the fruiting pruning, prune the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the interlocking branches in the center and shorten the longest ones that extend outward in order to maintain a harmonious silhouette.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
