Description

Peach 'Redwing' is a vigorous self-fertile variety that produces an abundance of fruit. Its small red peaches have a diameter of 6.5cm (3in). Their white flesh is sweet, fragrant, and without acidity. Children love them! The harvest takes place when the fruits are ripe, from mid-July to August. The flowering is early, making it unsuitable for cold regions.

Prunus persica was believed to originate from Persia, hence the species name "persica". In reality, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. Its appearance in Europe occurred in the 6th century and experienced significant development in the 19th century. From there, numerous selections aimed at improving the fruit's taste qualities took place. 'Redwing' was selected in Michigan, USA.

Like many fruit trees, 'Redwing' appreciates light, rich, and deep soils. It does not tolerate excess water or heavy and compact soils well. A sunny location sheltered from the wind will protect the flowering and help with fruiting.

It is a fairly vigorous tree. It has a spreading habit and a tall trunk with many branches with horizontal growth, giving it an elegant silhouette. Its deciduous foliage is bright green and emits a slight almond smell. Its leaves are long, from 8 to 15cm (3 to 6in) by 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) wide, with a short petiole.

Its pale-pink flowering occurs in early March. The cultivation of this variety is unsuitable for cold regions. The flowers are hermaphrodite and self-fertile.

Fruiting results in deep red small peaches with a diameter of 6.5cm (3in). Their white flesh is sweet, perfumed, and without acidity. This tree does not require too much maintenance. It tolerates pruning well.

Peaches can be enjoyed raw or cooked, in sweet or savoury dishes, flambéed, glazed, or deglazed. They pair very well with wine and meats such as duck. They can be found in many recipes, including jams, compotes, and pastries.

Planting and care

Ideally, plant from October to December. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water to moisten the entire root ball by capillary action. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole and fill with a mixture of soil and compost. Gently pack around the base of the fruit tree as you fill. The roots should be in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

It has a semi-pivoting root system. It will thrive in fairly deep soils that are light and well-draining.

Care

Pruning instructions Shape the tree in the following spring after planting. Only keep the branches that will form the tree's framework (about 5 branches). Fruits appear on one-year-old branches. Wood that has borne fruits will not reproduce. For fruiting pruning, prune the branches that have already borne fruits to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the crossing branches in the centre and shorten the longer ones that extend outward to maintain a balanced silhouette.
