Prunus Fantasia - Nectarine Tree

The Fantasia Nectarine is a hardy variety that thrives in warm, sunny and sheltered locations. It is sensitive to spring frosts, with late frost resulting in the destruction of future fruits. Its moderate growth is perfect for small gardens. In August, it produces a large 8 cm (3in) diameter nectarine with a smooth, red-orange skin. The flesh is yellow, highly aromatic, sweet and juicy. Self-fertile, it does not require a pollinator.

The species name "Persica" was given to the peach tree, originally thought to be from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. The Nectarine is a natural mutation of the peach tree that occurred in the 16th century. The Fantasia Nectarine is a free variety obtained by USDA Fresno in California (USA) through the cross-breeding of Gold King X Red King seedlings.

Like many fruit trees, the Fantasia Nectarine prefers light, rich and deep soils, and does not tolerate excessive water or heavy and compact soils. It is a moderately vigorous tree with a growth habit perfectly suited for small gardens. Its semi-spreading habit indicates a tall-trunked tree with numerous horizontal branches. They are majestic trees. Its deciduous foliage is a vibrant green and emits a slight almond scent. The leaves are long, measuring 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) in length and 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in width, with short petioles.
Its early pink flowering occurs in mid-March. This requires the tree, if grown north of the Loire River, to be situated in a sunny and sheltered location. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile. Apart from its frost-sensitive flowering, the Fantasia Nectarine is hardy and withstands frost well.
Fruiting occurs late. Its large, slightly elongated fruits are bright red with a yellow-orange background and can be harvested from mid-August. This tree does not require too much maintenance. It tolerates severe pruning, but not every year.

Nectarines can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, savory, flambéed, frozen or thawed. They pair well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in numerous recipes, particularly for jams, compotes, pastries.
