Description

Thunbergia alata, or more poetically Black-eyed Susan, is an annual climbing plant with charming orange and bicoloured flowers with black centres.

With rapid growth, your young plant will reach 2m (7ft) in just one summer, and will bloom continuously until September.

It is suitable for cultivation in both pots and open ground, in a sunny site. An incessant but light climber, it pairs well with perennial climbing plants and can also be used as ground cover.

We often associate it with summer flowering bulbs such as gladioli: it wraps itself around the leaves and blooms in the most unlikely places, adding a touch of whimsy to even the most rigid flower beds.

Young plants measuring 4 to 8 cm, in cases of 5 small plugs 3.6 cm in diameter and 4 cm high. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted in open ground.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks, before planting them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Thunbergia Alata in the ground or in a pot. In the ground, it is imperative to wait until the last frost has passed (Black-eyed Susans cannot tolerate frost and do not tolerate temperatures below 8° (46.4°F) well). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant in a full sun or partial shade. They need a light and humus-rich soil. They tolerate short periods of drought quite well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather to flower well. In pots, they need to be watered very regularly. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they reach 2m (7ft) in one summer. Remember to provide support if using them as climbers. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually very fragile perennials: by bringing them indoors in September, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter.
