Description

The Corkscrew Flower is a plant from the Bean family (Fabaceae) whose general appearance is quite similar to climbing beans. Phaseolus caracalla or Vigna caracalla is a fast-growing climber distinguished by the spiral shape of its flowers, which have earned it the common names of Corkscrew Flowers or Snail Bean. The name Caracole Bean comes from the Spanish word "caracol" which means snail.

Native to the tropical zone of South America, the Corkscrew Flower is a tender perennial plant that prefers temperatures above 15°C (59°F) to thrive. It can be grown as an annual plant in open ground or in a pot to be brought indoors in a greenhouse, conservatory, or a bright room in the house for winter.

Its evergreen foliage is composed of 15 cm (6in) long, medium green, palmate leaves. Its twining stems wrap around their support (to be provided at the time of planting) and can reach up to 6 m (20ft) high and spread up to 2 m (7ft) wide.

The 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2in) flowers are pink, white, or yellow. They have a butterfly-like shape and a curious spiral form. The flowers are borne in axillary clusters that are 10 to 30 cm (4 to 12in) long and appear from July to September, longer if the weather is mild.

The flowers are followed by fruits like beans. The pods are 15 to 18 cm (6 to 7in) long and have an almost round cross-section. The 'beans' are eaten in South America.

This unique plant will be perfect for creating an exuberant exotic decoration in the garden or on the terrace and balcony.

Planting and care

For use as a perennial plant in a pot, the seeds can be sown all year round. For use in the garden as an annual plant, sow from March to April.
Before sowing your seeds, soak them for 2 hours in a bowl of warm water to aid germination.
Use 7 cm (3in) pots and good quality soil, sifted on the surface to ensure the seed makes contact. Before sowing, lightly tamp down the soil. Sow your seeds 1 cm (0in) deep. Cover the seeds with a sprinkling of soil or vermiculite, lightly tamp down and water generously with a fine rose. Place your seed tray in a well-lit area, without direct sunlight, at a temperature of 21°C (69.8°F) to 25°C (77°F). Lower the temperature at night to 20°C (68°F) to help germination. The seeds will take 14 to 30 days to germinate. As soon as the seedlings appear, you can lower the temperature to between 15 and 20°C (59 and 68°F).

When the plants are large enough to be handled, transplant them into 12cm (5in) pots. Keep the soil moist but not wet. Gradually acclimatise them to a temperature of 15°C (59°F) for 15 days before planting in their final position.

By the end of May or the beginning of June, the temperature will be warm enough in the garden to plant out your young plants. Choose a sunny location and add a good amount of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 1.50m (5ft) apart.
