Description

Heliopsis Sunburst, also known as the False Sunflower, is a variety that stands out for its superb variegated foliage, making it attractive in any season. This tall perennial with summer flowering, has upright stems topped with large daisy-like flowers in a beautiful golden yellow, and is vigorous and robust. Perfect for borders and also stunning in bouquets.

Native to North America, Heliopsis Helanthoides Scabra Sunburst belongs to the Asteraceae family. Its name means 'resembling the sun'. Its large yellow flowers are carried on stiff and sturdy stems. The leaves of the Sunburst variety are beautifully variegated, adding a touch of whimsy to its great ornamental value without compromising its vigour. It has a dense habit, reaching a height of 70 cm (28in) and a width of 60 cm (24in).

The False Sunflower is an easy-to-grow plant, sturdy and will bloom from the first year. It thrives in full sun and any well-drained, fertile soil that doesn't dry out too much in summer.

It will find its place in many gardens: in a mixed border in an English garden, as an edging plant in a cottage garden, or even in a meadow, alongside grasses, in a more natural space. You can combine it with many other perennials such as Echinacea, Agastache, or variegated grasses like Miscanthus sinensis zebrinus and Hakonechloa macra Aureola.

Note: Some plants grown from your sowing (+ or - 10%) may have non-variegated leaves, you can remove them as soon as you spot them or keep them to create a mix and thus highlight the variegation of the other plants.

Planting and care

Sow Heliopsis from February to June on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator (or enclose it in a polyethylene bag) or above a radiator, at a temperature of 18 to 25 °C. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Light aids germination, which usually takes around 30 days.

When the young Heliopsis plants are large enough to handle, proceed with transplanting. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions until they are strong enough to be planted outside. Transplant into well-drained soil at a distance of 45 cm (18in).
