Description

The Chinese Red Mustard is an oriental salad with red leaves and a spicy taste. It can be consumed raw, on its own or in a mesclun, or cooked, like spinach. Its flavor is then milder. It is sown in August-September, in the garden or in a pot, for a harvest from October to December.

These salads are called "cut and come again" because they generally have the ability to regrow after harvest, as long as the root is not completely removed.

Harvest: Harvest the Chinese mustard, leaf by leaf, as needed.

Storage: Mustard leaves should be consumed as soon as possible.

Gardening tip: Regular weeding and hoeing should be done. A protective insect net can be installed against flea beetles.

Organic or "AB" seeds are derived from plants grown in organic farming (without the use of pesticides). They undergo no treatment after harvest. These seeds are suitable for organic market gardening.

Planting and care

Sowing

August to September.

Seeds should be sown thinly in loosened soil, with rows spaced 40 cm (16in) apart. Cover the seeds with half a centimeter of compost or fine soil. Gently firm down with the back of a rake and water with a fine spray. Keep sufficiently moist until germination, which usually takes 8 days.

Maintenance

When the young plants have 4 to 5 leaves, thin them out, leaving one plant every 25 cm (10in). Regularly weed and water.
