Thank you to the individuals (specific research area: order preparation & Shauna from the shipping department), the 3 bulbs received appear to be healthy to me. Planted near Boxwood, I am now waiting for them to take root (...or not?).

Description

The Asian lily 'Landini' is a recent creation, with large flowers richly coloured in garnet red, with black reflections depending on the light, on purple petals so dark that they also appear black. A rare colour and paradoxically bright for the darkest of lilies. Easy to grow in non-limestone soil, this variety is prolific and long-lasting, to the point that you will need to make room for it. Once well established, it faithfully blooms every year and quickly naturalises in flower beds, pots, or even large rockeries. Its association with white or pale pink flowers is sensational in the garden as well as in bouquets.

The genus Lilium belongs to the lily family, these representatives are bulbous plants with deciduous foliage, having, from spring, a narrow and very vertical habit. 'Landini' is a hybrid obtained by cross-breeding various species from Asia Minor and Central Asia. This plant will reach 70 to 90 cm (28 to 35in) in height when in bloom, and the clump will spread indefinitely over time, with the bulbs producing bulblets through vegetative multiplication. The spectacle of its flowering takes place in July-August. Along the sturdy stems appear 5 to 8 flowers measuring up to 12 cm (5in) in diameter, on a mature plant. They are fleshy and shiny like satin, in a whirlwind of garnet, purple, black, and even pink reflections that play with the light. The stamens are covered with orange pollen, the pistil crowned with old pink completing the harmony of colours. This flower does not fade in the sun. The stems are very sturdy, covered with alternate, dark green, narrow, and shiny leaves.

A plant that thrives in rich humus soil, this lily thrives year after year in neutral, humus-rich, well-drained, and light soil. You can associate it with perennial plants as it appreciates having its base in the shade. 'Landini' pairs well with pink or white daylilies, Heuchera, campanulas, and creeping Phlox that will cover its base with an elegant carpet. This medium-sized lily is ideal for borders, flower beds, and of course, bouquets.

Planting and care

The 'Landini' lily appreciates humus-rich, neutral to slightly acidic, well-drained and light soils. You will plant it in full sun, with the roots in the shade, preferably in spring, burying the bulbs 15 cm (6in) deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. Surround them with a pocket of sand that will protect them from rot and slug attacks, while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as growth only starts in April. If red insects appear, treat them immediately, as they are lily beetles whose larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them manually, but be careful as they drop as soon as you touch them, so put a box underneath. Otherwise, treat regularly with permethrin.

After flowering, it is useful to cut the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed beautiful during the summer.

Tips for planting lilies in compact soil: Bulbous lilies fear clay soils that suffocate them and cause rot. In Eastern Europe, the following technique is used to help these bulbs survive the winter. Plant them on 'benches' built above ground level. These benches consist of a layer of gravel, on which tightly packed branches are placed. Then cover everything with a thick layer of compost, 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) deep. Plant the bulbs in the compost, on which you can also let some ground-covering plants crawl.

On the terrace, you can create magnificent pots with lilies. Choose a container that is large and deep enough (at least 16 cm (6in) in diameter for 1 bulb). Fill it with a mixture of garden soil, leaf compost, and sand. Plant the lilies in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs, 10-15 cm (4-6in) apart, then water thoroughly. Place the pots in a cool room or outside once the frost has passed. The ambient temperature should be around 12°C (53.6°F). When shoots appear, move the pot to a conservatory or a very bright room, at a temperature of around 18°C (64.4°F). Apply liquid fertilizer twice a month until flower buds appear.
