Graden Merit Value-for-money
Very beautiful variety producing a single and giant flower, with a pure white colour sometimes shaded with cream. Its stem, very tall and rigid, disregards bad weather and proves perfect in bouquets. 'Maureen', luminous and fresh like an Irish spring, behaves very well in the garden. It blooms in May, at the end of the tulip season.

Description

The 'Maureen' Tulip is a historic variety dating back to 1950, unmatched in its category of late singles. It bears a giant, cup-shaped, milky-white flower at the top of a tall and rigid stem, sometimes shaded with cream and iridescent with silver in full light. 'Maureen', wherever it is in the garden, brightens and soothes the beds of more brightly coloured flowers. An excellent cut flower, it also performs very well in the garden, even in adverse weather conditions.

The 'Maureen' Tulip, internationally known, is part of the old Darwin hybrid varieties. It has been awarded an AGM (Award of Garden Merit) in England. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 5, whose main characteristic is late flowering. Among the tallest, it will reach 60 cm (24in) in height when in bloom. Perched on sturdy stems well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, its large flowers stand out for their size and brilliance. The colour is between white and ivory, but shows beautiful silvery, iridescent reflections that make it appear almost luminescent, especially in full sun. The flowering, particularly long in this tetraploid variety, generally takes place in May-June, making it useful in the garden to transition between spring and early summer blooms.

The late single tulip 'Maureen' finds its place in large well-drained beds, in the company of foliage plants (grasses, fennel, lady's mantle) and late tulips of all colours, pink (Angelique), black (Queen of the Night), yellow, orange (Sunrise), red, variegated (Nice Carnival) or mauve (Shirley), perennials such as peonies or wallflowers in pastel tones. They also lengthen the flowering period of the beds. They can be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, even in pots and containers, think of them for your balconies and terraces. Ideal for creating elegant bouquets, use very little water in their vase, just a little at the bottom. Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant your 'Maureen' tulips as soon as possible in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant them at a depth of 15 cm (6in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height in soil). Space the bulbs a few cm apart, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and let the leaves dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly and faded. We recommend planting Heuchera, Foamflower, Brunnera, Bleeding Heart, Cypress Spurge, at the front of your flower beds. Their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and during the season, they will elegantly hide their yellowed leaves.
