A very doubled tulip, opulent, reminiscent of a peony or a rose. Its colour, a bit unpredictable, is a blend of purplish pink, mauve, and lilac. It blooms at the end of the tulip season, at the same time as the 'Angelic' and 'Mount Tacoma' tulips, with which it forms a beautiful watercolor.

Description

The Late Double Tulip 'Blue Diamond' is a marvel, a real gem for spring borders. Its very double flower, a little nonchalant, evokes with its magnificent curves a peony or a rose. Its colour, somewhat unpredictable, probably depending on the soil it grows in, is a mix of purple-pink, mauve, and lilac, with sometimes a touch of blue. The stem is short and sturdy, it flowers for a long time, at the same time as the 'Angelic' and 'Mount Tacoma' tulips, with which it creates a beautiful watercolour.

The 'Blue Diamond' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, obtained in 1962 in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', whose main characteristic is to have very double and ruffled flowers. 'Blue Diamond' is not very tall (30-40 cm (12-16in)) and its flower is of a good size, double and well-arranged. It shows excellent durability. Its palette of fresh colours includes shades of pink, purple, mauve, lilac. The original shape of the tulip brings an additional charm, it is a real favorite, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase, almost ceremoniously. The flowering starts very early, in April, and lasts relatively late, until May, when other tulips have already faded long ago.

With varied, tender or vibrant colours, opulent and naive flowers, late double tulips are unrivaled for bringing fantasy to pots or sunny gardens, alongside the most beautiful spring blooms or dark tulips like 'Queen of the Night'. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your borders, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for cutting, as they make superb long-lasting flowers in a vase, and that is where the flowers of 'Blue Diamond' will bring the greatest satisfaction.

Planting and care

Plant your 'Blue Diamond' tulips in a well-drained soil. Loosen the soil deeply. Plant at a depth of 15 cm (6in) (Bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs about ten centimetres apart or in clumps, making sure they do not touch each other. Choose a sunny exposure for better flowering. After flowering, cut the flower stalks and allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly and wilted, so we recommend planting Heucheras, Tiarellas, Brunneras, Bleeding Hearts, Cypress Spurge, in the foreground of your flower beds, their foliage will enhance the colours of your tulips and during the season, they will elegantly conceal their yellowed leaves.
