Description

Narcissus Sophie Girl is a variety with single flowers composed of pure white tepals and a lovely salmon pink crown. Ideal for spring flowers in beds or containers.

Narcissus are the hardiest bulbs planted in autumn and tolerate both full sun and partial shade. They prefer well-drained soil but can also thrive in heavy soil.

For bouquets: We advise against mixing Narcissus with other flowers, tulips in particular, as the Narcissus stems contain a substance that causes other flowers to wilt quickly. This detrimental effect on other flower types can be reduced by dipping the ends of the Narcissus stems in hot water for 1 to 2 minutes.

Narcissus come back every year. Unlike perennial plants, there is no need to feed before flowering. Only cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser then, this is when the bulb replenishes itself and prepares for the following year's flowers.

Planting and care

Narcissus Sophie Girl is very easy to grow, suited to the shade of the undergrowth or a sunny flower bed. Plant your bulbs 10 cm (4in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart, in minimum clusters of 5 bulbs, in uniform or mixed colours. To plant them in the lawn: lift a patch of turf, dig and loosen the soil to at least 20 cm (8in) (the depth of a spade), place your bulbs, cover them with soil, and replace the turf. Choose a location where you won't be mowing, as you must let the narcissus leaves wither before cutting them. This is when the bulb replenishes itself and prepares for next year's flowers. However, remember to cut the flowers as soon as they fade to prevent seed formation which would unnecessarily deplete the bulb.
