Tamarix ramosissima Rubra

Tamarix ramosissima 'Rubra' is a variety of deciduous tamarisk with plume-like clusters of very dark pink, almost red flowers in the middle of summer. It forms a medium-sized bush or even a small tree, with a spread then weeping habit, its decorative reddish-brown branches are flexible, arching and gracefully cascading. Its deciduous foliage consists of scales of fresh bluish green that completely cover the stems and give a light appearance to the whole. Very dense, they provide good protection against strong winds. It is a sturdy shrub, resistant to sea spray, cold and heat. It prefers moist, well-drained soils, even sandy, normal but also tolerates drought, poor soils. Plant it in full sun to enjoy an even more spectacular flowering. Perfect for coastal areas!

Tamarix ramosissima 'Rubra' is a large bush with a  spread habit, reaching a height and spread of 3 to 5m. It is known for its abundant misty summer flowering, with very dark pink clusters measuring 4 to 8cm (1.6 to 3.1in) long, appearing during the months of July to August. Its reddish-brown bark enhances its flowering and foliage. Easy to grow, the summer tamarisk thrives in well-drained, not too rich soil. Its ability to withstand saline environments makes it a solution for coastal gardens. Native to China, it has good hardiness (around -12°C (10.4 °F)).

Plant it as a standalone, in groups, in flower beds with evergreen Ceanothus, Mexican orange blossom, Escallonias, or as a windbreak hedge with other coastal hedge shrubs like Griselinia, Spartium (broom), Cistus, Eleagnus, Atriplex, etc. Prefer a sunny exposure to obtain a well-developed and well-flowered bush. It can also be planted in containers around a terrace.
