The shrub I received is magnificent. Although it is not advisable to plant it directly in the open ground, it seems to have tolerated the first few days spent in its pot very well. Let's wait and see...

Description

Rhamnus frangula 'Aspleniifolia', formerly known as Frangula alnus and more commonly known as fern-leaved buckthorn or laciniate-leaved buckthorn, is a bush perfectly adapted to our soil and climate as it is native to our regions. It grows in the undergrowth throughout the territory, it has a medicinal reputation but with the 'Aspleniifolia' variety, it becomes decorative.

The very fine leaves in dense clusters give a nice lightness to this bush with a rounded habit. In autumn, they take on beautiful golden hues. A very intricate silhouette for a beautiful japanese-like effect without the usual constraints of Asian plants. Indeed, the buckthorn, the alder buckthorn or the alder, no matter what it is called, is very tolerant to limestone. The black berries will attract birds to your garden as they are fond of them.

Plant the Rhamnus frangula 'Aspleniifolia' as an informal hedge for example or in a large bed below a larger tree to elegantly dress its trunk.

Despite its medicinal reputation, it is advisable to consider the buckthorn fruits as toxic as they are a powerful purgative with difficult dosage to assess.

Planting and care

To plant your Rhamnus frangula 'Aspleniifolia', simply ensure that the young plant is not in direct sunlight. Partial shade is preferable, as it is sensitive to summer droughts when young. If you plant it in spring, you can also water it for a while to ensure its establishment. Pruning should be done lightly before the buds start to grow in late winter.
