Description

The Prunus cerasifera Nigra (Atropurpurea) is a shrub with a round crown, that is very easy to grow. This flowering plum blooms from March to April; its numerous flowers open to show an intense candy pink shade, adorned with a cluster of crimson-purple stamens. The flowers, grouped in 3-4, measure from 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in diameter.

Just after flowering, Prunus cerasifera Atropurpurea becomes covered with deciduous oval leaves, 6 to 8cm (2 to 3in) long with a crenate edge. Initially bronze red, they turn intense black in summer and retain this colour until autumn. Very hardy, this selection was obtained in North America.

Slow-growing, this shrub with dark foliage is suitable for specimen planting or in the back of a flowerbed, in contrast with light foliage.
