Description

Hypericum x moserianum 'Tricolor', also known as St. John's wort, is a small bush that displays bright yellow star-shaped flowers with variegated green, cream, and pink leaves.

A hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding of Hypericum calycinum and H. patulum, this young plant forms a small clump with reddish arched shoots, reaching a height of 40cm (16in) and a width of 50cm (20in). From summer to autumn, it displays cup-shaped yellow flowers, measuring 3 to 5cm (1 to 2in) in diameter. Its ovate and pointed leaves, measuring 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in length, are evergreen in mild climates but deciduous during heavy frost.

Not demanding in terms of soil type, 'Tricolor' thrives in ordinary, well-drained soil. It grows in semi-shaded exposure or in non-scorching sunlight, but requires a location sheltered from drying winds.

Its cascade of colourful leaves and its bright yellow flowers will make a great impression in a container. It is mainly appreciated in gardens for its foliage. It enjoys being planted in a rockery, along a pathway, in isolation, in groups, or as a mass planting, and is excellent as ground cover. Pair it with blue shades or various shades of purple such as Caryopteris, Hebe, and Perovskia.
