Description
Hydrangea quercifolia Yeti® is a variety of oak-leaf hydrangea that combines a neat silhouette, repeat flowering and panicles of white flowers that turn pink in season. Its moderate growth and abundant flowering make this shrub a beautiful subject to plant at the edge of a light woodland, in a partially shaded border or on a terrace in a large container. Enjoy its flowers in summer, its colours in autumn and its bark that exfoliates in winter.
From the Hydrangeaceae family, the botanical species Hydrangea quercifolia is native to the southeastern United States (North Carolina to Tennessee, down to Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi). The epithet quercifolia combines Quercus (oak) and folium (leaf) in reference to the lobed leaves. The cultivar '1925querrep', marketed in Europe under the trade name Yeti® and in North America under the name Autumn Reprise™, is a descendant of the cultivar 'Amethyst'. This plant was selected in 2017 in Cochranville, Pennsylvania. Compared to the type species and to similar cultivars, this hydrangea is distinguished by repeat flowering, a good tolerance to leaf spot, dense branching and an upright-compact habit.
A deciduous shrub with moderate growth (around 45cm per year), Hydrangea quercifolia Yeti® reaches 1.50m to 2m in height with a similar spread when planted in the ground at 8–10 years old; in a container (11-litre pot), specimens reach about 75cm tall and 90cm wide. The sturdy stems become woody and then, with age, display bark that exfoliates in thin flakes.
The lobed foliage (often 5 lobes) usually measures 13–19cm long by 9.5–12cm wide; it is hairy, medium green in summer, and takes on purplish tones in autumn.
The flowering appears in conical terminal panicles about 14cm long by 11cm, composed of numerous small fertile flowers and a collar of large sterile flowers with 4 sepals; this flowering emits a strong and pleasant fragrance. The inflorescences open white, then turn pink over the course of the season.
The Yeti® hydrangea is superb in a large, slightly shaded border or in a large container. As for companions, choose plants of fine textures and light blooms. Clethra alnifolia ‘Ruby Spice’ offers fragrant spikes in late summer and warm shades in autumn; Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ forms a supple and bright ribbon at its base without taking up too much space; the fern Athyrium niponicum ‘Pictum’ has a fine and silvery texture that highlights the panicles of the hydrangea.

Hydrangea quercifolila Yeti requires a sunny position to enhance autumn colours, but doesn't like too scorching exposures: morning sun or the shade of a large tree during the hottest hours are preferable, particularly in regions with very strong sun and high temperatures. It prefers a humus-bearing, neutral to acidic soil, but tolerates the presence of lime in the soil better than other hydrangeas after careful planting. On the other hand, it does not tolerate compacted and poorly drained soils, which affect its hardiness and hinder the development of its roots, which can go deep into the soil.
Prepare a hole filled with a mixture of leaf mould and garden soil. Plant it in deeply worked soil. A good base fertiliser (hoof and horn or dried blood) will encourage your plant to establish and feed it without risk of burning. If your soil tends to be very dry in summer, mix a water-retaining agent into the soil when filling the planting hole and provide a watering basin on the surface. Once well established, this Hydrangea requires no watering in summer, except perhaps in southern regions, where it will appreciate weekly watering, or even every two weeks, depending on the weather.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
