Description
Hydrangea macrophylla Rebellion® ‘Pink Love’ is a gentle, fresh variety, appealing with its prolonged pastel flowering and compact habit. This cultivar offers early and abundant flowering until autumn, even in cold climates. From the very first days of summer, it reveals charming spherical flower clusters, first pistachio green, gradually tinting with soft pink over the weeks. In a pot on a terrace or in a small garden, this shrub is easy-going, hardy, and reliable.
Hydrangea macrophylla, native to East Asia (China and Japan), belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family. 'Pink Love' is a cultivar from the Rebellion® range, composed of compact and robust varieties, with their spherical inflorescences, changing colours, and adaptation to cold climates. Rebellion® hydrangeas are distributed in several Central European countries, notably the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary, where they regularly appear in the catalogues of specialist nurseries.
Hydrangea 'Pink Love' is a deciduous shrub that forms a dense, well-structured clump with a rounded, compact habit. It generally reaches between 1 m and 1.20 m in height for about 1 m in width, but can spread up to 1.40 to 1.50 m in optimal conditions. Its growth is moderate, around 10 to 20 cm per year. From June onwards, it produces large globular inflorescences, made up of small sterile, tightly packed flowers on one-year-old wood. These flowers open in soft pistachio green tones, then evolve into a bright light pink, taking on deeper shades over time. This colourful progression creates a natural bouquet effect, where several shades blend harmoniously on the plant. Flowering continues on the current year's shoots. The dense and decorative, deciduous foliage is composed of opposite leaves, ovate to elliptical in shape, finely serrated on the edges and ending in a slender tip. A deep, slightly glossy green, they generally measure between 10 and 15 cm. In autumn, they take on warmer hues before falling.
The soft and luminous, rich flowering of Rebellion® hydrangea 'Pink Love' fits perfectly into a romantic garden, a shaded terrace, or a more contemporary setting. Thanks to its compact habit, it is equally suitable for small gardens and container growing. Place it in partial shade, at the back of a border or near a path, where its changing flowering will attract attention all summer long. Pair it with pale pink astilbes ('Peach Blossom', ‘Bumalda’), variegated hostas (‘Patriot’, ‘Francee’) or summer heathers (Calluna vulgaris ‘Radnor’) to create pastel scenes. At its base, you can plant grape hyacinths or white double daffodils 'Obdam'.
Note: The flower colour of Hydrangea macrophylla varies significantly according to the soil pH. Traditionally, blue varieties turn pink in neutral or alkaline soil. To maintain a beautiful blue colour, mix acidic soil or peat into your garden soil and apply aluminium sulphate (slate contains some) or alum each spring.

Planting and care
Plant Hydrangea macrophylla 'Rebellion Pink Love' in spring or early autumn, preferably in a shaded spot, for example against an east-facing wall. It tolerates morning sun well. Protect it from cold, drying winds. It does not necessarily require acidic soil, but appreciates deep, moist but well-drained, fairly fertile soil, possibly enriched with a good fertiliser before planting. If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, place the root ball at least 30 to 40 cm away from the wall and incorporate well-rotted compost to better retain moisture in the soil. Very hardy, capable of flowering on the current year's shoots, it is fine planted in very cold regions.

- On the west coast and in the north-west (Galway, Limerick, Sligo, Donegal, Westport), delay planting by 1 to 2 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 1 to 2 weeks in autumn compared to the dates given, preferably choosing periods without strong winds.
- In the inland hills and plateaus (Wicklow Mountains, Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, Connemara, Killarney), it is best to plant in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October), avoiding periods of waterlogged soil in winter and strong winds, which pose the main risk to newly planted trees in these areas.
